South Korea Accelerates ‘RE100’ Industrial Complexes to Attract Global AI and High-Tech Companies

The South Korean government is moving forward with plans to establish ‘RE100 industrial complexes’ powered entirely by renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. These complexes aim to attract global AI data centers and advanced industry leaders by providing 100% clean electricity. The initiative targets regions with abundant renewable resources, like Jeonnam, Jeonbuk, and Ulsan, and seeks to address both transmission bottlenecks and regional economic development. However, the higher cost of renewable electricity remains a challenge, prompting the government to consider strategies to supply clean energy at competitive prices. A cross-government task force will develop detailed plans, including special legislation, by the end of the year. The move is in response to the growing demand for renewable energy from multinational corporations and Korea’s leading exporters, who risk losing market access without meeting RE100 standards.
